CAVEAT

Texts of magic, charms and spells are often obscure, as they were generally intended not for a wide audience, but for inducted practitioners of the sciences. They include technical terminology and arcane formulae, whose meanings are now forgotten. Indeed, in some cases, they may not have been understood by those who used them or recorded them. Furthermore these texts generally take the form of notebooks rather than expository treatises. “Perhimpunan Gunawan” is more accessible than most, but it remains obscure at many points.

As a result, the text presented here is provisional. Some words appearing in this text are not listed in dictionaries, and perhaps no longer understood. This applies particularly to the wording of spells and charms.

The manuscript comprises two parts: — juz’ 1, pp.1-53; — juz’ 2, pp.54-97. Only the first part is presented here.
DCM describes the manuscript thus:
Tulisan tangannya besar, maka mudah dibaca, kecuali beberapa perkataan yang sudah terlalu kelam ditulis pensil sehingga tidak dapat dipastikan. Isi kandungan manuskrip telah jelas daripada judulnya. Ia merupakan koleksi atau perhimpunan pelbagai ilmu, aksam sumpah, jampi, tilawah, wirid, kundang, guna, doa, serapah, ilmu tangkal, ilmu pengasih dan tuntutan bersetubuh. Ternyata bahawa 80% isi kandungannya ditujukan kepada wanita untuk membuat laki-laki merasa berahi terhadap dirinya.

The texts of charms are often in Arabic or are mystical syllables. These are not indexed in the Concordance.
Where the copy of the manuscript available to Ding, Mukherjee and Proudfoot is unclear, illegible words have been indicated with xxx. These are also not indexed in the Concordance.

Khatijah Terong
According to Ding Choo Ming, Khatijah Terong hails from Pulau Penyengat, Riau. She was born in 1885. Although a commoner, she became the fourth wife of Raja Haji Abdullah bin Raja Hassan in 1908, and moved to a house in his compound, where she wrote “Perhimpunan Gunawan”.
