Editorial notes and bibliography

The manuscript is a notebook kept by Khadijah Terung, recording Perhimpunan Gunawan bagi Laki-Laki dan Perempuan (pp.1-52) followed by miscellany assembled between 1910 or 1911 and 1923, noted by Khadijah Terung and two or three other hands.

DCM describes the manuscript thus:

Tulisan tangannya besar, maka mudah dibaca, kecuali beberapa perkataan yang sudah terlalu kelam ditulis pensil sehingga tidak dapat dipastikan. Isi kandungan manuskrip telah jelas daripada judulnya. Ia merupakan koleksi atau perhimpunan pelbagai ilmu, aksam sumpah, jampi, tilawah, wirid, kundang, guna, doa, serapah, ilmu tangkal, ilmu pengasih dan tuntutan bersetubuh. Ternyata bahawa 80% isi kandungannya ditujukan kepada wanita untuk membuat laki-laki merasa berahi terhadap dirinya.

 

Pages 47 to 52 are in poor condition.  Page 82 in part and pages 83 onwards are in a small cursive script sometimes unclear.  Note that pages following 52 have two numbering systems.  The original system continued numbering at “Hubungan juz’ yang pertama daripada Kitab Perhimpunan Gunawan bagi Laki-Laki dan Perempuan”, ingoring some intervening pages, which may have been filled in later.  Subsequently the pages were renumbered consecutively, so that “Hubungan juz’ yang pertama daripada Kitab Perhimpunan Gunawan bagi Laki-Laki dan Perempuan” begins on p.53 (old) and p.63 (new).  The old numbers are used in the MCP.

The texts of charms are often in Arabic or are mystical syllables.  These are not indexed in the Concordance, but images are supplied.  The images can be accessed by clicking on © symbols occuring in the text.

Where the copy of the manuscript available to Ding, Mukherjee and Proudfoot is unclear, illegible words have been indicated with  xxx.   These are also not indexed in the Concordance.

Khadijah Terong

According to Ding Choo Ming, Khadijah Terong hails from Pulau Penyengat, Riau. She was born in 1885.   Although a commoner, she became the fourth wife of Raja Haji Abdullah bin Raja Hassan in 1908, and moved to a house in his compound, where she wrote “Perhimpunan Gunawan”.

Preparation

Added:  June 2008;  revised December 2009.

Initially Raja Hamzah Yunus loaned the manuscript to Ding Choo Ming, who prepared a romanisation.  Subsequently, Ding Choo Ming made copies of this material available to Wendy Mukherjee.  In 2008, Wendy Mukherjee and Ian Proudfoot read through copies of both the jawi text and the romanisation provided by Ding Choo Ming, making some editorial changes, and adding short passages omitted from the original.

In 2007-2008, Jan van der Putten gained funding from the British Library under its Endangered Archives program for a digitisation project "Riau manuscripts: the gateway to the Malay intellectual world".   As one of the fruits of this project, he was able to provide new images of the text, and in 2009 Ian Proudfoot read these along with the existing transcription, making amendments.
